The Shema: One God, One Life, One Purpose

Deuteronomy 6:4-9

May 12, 2024
Mother’s Day

  • Review the sermon from Sunday. What was the big idea? What stood out to you?

  • Read Deuteronomy 6:4-9. Collin talked on Sunday about how central this verse was and is in the Jewish faith. Why do you think that is? What is significant about these words?

  • What kind of faith does Deuteronomy 6 call God’s people to? How would you describe it? Is this like or unlike the Christian faith you see most prevalently in our culture?

  • What are the limitations of being “church-centric” in our faith? How could filtering all our spiritual experience through church-sponsored events, gatherings, and content limit our ability to live out a Deuteronomy 6 kind of faith?

  • Read verses 5 and 6 again. Discuss this question: “Where are you oriented?” What does it look like to be oriented toward God in our devotion? Does that describe you? Why/why not?

  • Read verses 7 through 9 again. Now discuss this: “What are you orbiting?” What does it look like to have a life that is centered on God? Would you say that describes you? Why/why not?

  • What changes do you feel God is calling you to make to your life in order to live out a more whole-hearted and life-encompassing devotion to him?

  • Take some time to pray for God to help you take a step toward fuller devotion to him.
